Enterprise: The First Adventure
Written by Vonda N. McIntyre and published by Pocket Books in 1986, this Star Trek novel stars the cast of The Original Series. It is set before the series begins and explains how the crew came together.
Summary: In their first mission, Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and the rest of the Enterprise crew are assigned for three months to transport Amelinda Lukarian's vaudeville troop to the starbases in the Federation Phalanx (a region of disputed space on the Federation-Klingon border) in order to boost morale. The troop's second performance is interrupted when the Enterprise is thrown out of warp by the sudden arrival of a gigantic starship. The crew must solve the problems caused by the worldship and its inhabitants, the Klingon renegade Koronin and the Klingon warship fleet assigned to capture her, and their own internal relationships. |
Connection to Hamlet:
Cockspur, an actor in Amelinda Lukarian's Warp-Speed Classic Vaudeville Company, recites his own Federation Standard (the official language of the United Federation of Planets) tranlation of Hamlet's "to be or not to be" soliloquy at a performance aboard the worldship. As a nod to Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the Klingon audience members respond to his performance with overwhelming enthusiasm.
