Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek (later nicknamed Star Trek: The Original Series to distinguish it within the franchise that it began) is a science fiction television show created by Gene Roddenberry and aired on NBC between September 8, 1966 and June 3, 1969. There were three seasons and a total of seventy-nine episodes (not including the first pilot, "The Cage") before the show was canceled. Much of the cast later appeared in The Animated Series and the first six Star Trek films.
Set in the Milky Way galaxy in the 23rd century, the show follows the space voyage of the starship USS Enterprise and her crew. The most prominent characters include Captain James Tiberius "Jim" Kirk (William Shatner), Vulcan first officer and science officer Commander Spock (Leonard Nimoy), chief medical officer Lieutenant Commander Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (DeForest Kelley), chief engineer Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan), communications officer Lieutenant Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), helmsman Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu (George Takei), navigator Ensign Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig; introduced in the show's second season), and Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett).
The first Star Trek series established the practice of incorporating works of Shakespeare into the show. Find out more about references to Hamlet below:
